Chitika has the final nail in its coffin after its Partnership termination earlier this year, March. It is this termination which has to lead to the effective end of the 15-year-old online advertising network.

Founded back in 2003 co-founders Venkat Kolluri and Alden DoRosario after leaving their jobs at search engine-based company Lycos.

The Advertising Network centered its focus on helping online Advertiser gain traffic and Publishers/Content creators monitize thier online traffic.

Chitika has had a few partnerships over the years including b5media Network and Yahoo who closed their AdSense competitor Yahoo Publisher Network Online (YPNO) back in 2010 began recommending publishers migrate to Chitika as a replacement.

Yahoo even announced a multi-year extension of its partnership with Chitika back in 2013 which included “off-network search syndication, monetization of Yahoo! owned and operated properties, and mobile ad serving and monetization”.

It is quite evident that the Partner in question which has lead to the closure of this ad network is squarely at Verizon Media group which now operates the Yahoo brand and has made some key shifts in its operations.

One would argue that a Chitika failure isn’t complete due to this partnership but its also failed to compete, Innovate, placing their eggs in one basket, marketing and differentiate itself from similar Ad Networks. The changing consumer behavior towards advertising and the rise of mobile advertising also played a key role in its demise.

Sure enough in 2015, Chitika’s founders announced Cidewalk, their local mobile ad platform would be spun off into a separate business unit with $4 Million in seed funding and new office space in Southborough, MA.

What Happens Next?

All Chitika publishers have until the 30th of April 2019 to remove codes from their websites as it ceases all ad services after that date. No payouts will be made for funds accumulated after the 1st of March and all ads charged for periods after that date have been recharged.
