The vintage cartoon-styled award-winning game Cuphead is getting a Netflix animated series titled The Cuphead Show!. The popular game developed by StudioMDHR and launched back in 2017 has now sold more than 4 million units worldwide.
Netflix Animation and King Features Syndicate will develop the new Show based on the Run Gun Shooter. The character-driven comedy follows the unique misadventures of the impulsive Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman.
The game has won over 20 major awards, including Special Achievement in Animation at the 45th Annual Annie Awards, Xbox One’s Game of the Year, a BAFTA Games award for Music, and a trio of statues at the 2017 Game Awards for Best Debut, Best Independent Game, and Best Art Direction.
King Features has worked with iconic characters such as Betty Boop and Popeye. King Feats first syndicated those characters’ comic strips in newspapers the better part of a century ago and currently licenses the brands.
For King Features, CJ Kettler will serve as the Executive Producer and creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer will serve as Executive Producers for Studio MDHR. The series will be produced by Netflix Animation and is executive produced by Emmy and Annie Award-winning producer, Dave Wasson (Mickey Mouse Shorts) and Cosmo Segurson (Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling) serves as co-executive producer.
Netflix is ramping up its Animation based content in its bid to compete with rival streaming service providers. Netflix has adopted multiple seasons of Skylanders Academy and the Castlevania animated series along with new deals for shows based on the Niantic’s Ingress and The Witcher.
The game itself is enjoyable and designed to entertain hence the Cuphead Show will definitely looks to be a promising animated series based on the team that is behind it.
